Be Aware of Rental Fraud

Alert message sent 18/07/2018 22:23:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Dear Members of South Leicester

Hello, hope you all are well. I have been reading some recent fraud articles thankfully not in our area but something I want you all to be aware of just in case. "The rental fraud is becoming quite common".

The most typical fraud is where someone has rented an apartment and is reaching the end of their agreement. They put an advert on the Internet such as Gumtree targeting students or people with a low income. They advertise the apartment they are living in pretending to be the ‘Landlord’. The victim is attracted to the apartment which the fake Landlord shows them around. The Victim is told that they have got people queueing for this type of place and they are then pushed into making a cash deposit to secure their place and given a date in the future to move in. This is then repeated a number of times to other victims who has seen the advert. The fake ‘Landlord’ then is nowhere to be seen and the true Landlord who owns the premises is not even aware that their tenant did this fraud.

My advice is that anyone who is looking for a place to rent to ensure that any transactions should be done via a bank transfer but avoid using transfer services like Western Union.

For more information or if you have been a subject to this type of fraud is to urgently contact Action Fraud via the link below which you can make a report online via clicking on the tab “REPORT IT”.
