Stoneygate Ward July newsletter 

Welcome to my monthly update for the residents and communities of the Stoneygate Neighbourhood Policing Area. This newsletter will be circulated on a regular basis and will provide an insight into what is happening at the NPA.

Particular areas of concern include St James Road and its connected to local hostels. Evington Rd (Cleanliness, fly tipping, bin misuse, parking, bus stop CCTV), patch walks with multi-agencies, patrols, and Cllr meetings and local crime summit

Drug dealing (South Highfields including Lincoln Street, Conduit Street, College St, Upper Tichborne Street)

Road Safety. In particular, zig zag parking on Evington Road, junction blocking off this main strip, and inconsiderate parking around schools

We understand that drug dealing and associated anti-social behaviour remain a significant concern for many residents in the local area. Addressing these issues continues to be a priority for the neighbourhood policing team.

This month, PCSO Trantom met with our Problem Solving Team, Leicestershire Police Crime Prevention Officers, and representatives from the Home Office to discuss the ongoing concerns affecting the South Highfields and St James Road areas. As part of this work, a joint patch walk was carried out to identify opportunities to tackle drug-related criminality and anti-social behaviour more effectively.

Following the patch walk, PCSO Trantom was invited to attend a meeting with the Minister for Policing to discuss knife crime and some of the barriers neighbourhood teams face when problem solving. The meeting provided an opportunity to highlight local issues and explore how policing and partner agencies can be better supported in tackling crime and protecting communities.

A report is now being developed to consider a range of options that may help improve the area. This includes reviewing environmental factors such as road layouts, lighting, and other measures that could reduce opportunities for crime, deter anti-social behaviour, and help safeguard victims and vulnerable members of the community.

We have also received support from our Proactive Team, who have been conducting plain-clothes patrols within the area. These patrols assist in gathering intelligence and allow officers to use stop and search powers where lawful grounds exist.

As a neighbourhood team, we have several plans in development to address the concerns that residents have raised. However, to protect ongoing policing activity, we are unable to discuss specific details at this stage. We hope to provide further updates on this work in the coming weeks and months as these initiatives progress.

We would like to thank residents for continuing to report concerns and provide information. Community intelligence plays a vital role in helping us identify offenders, target resources effectively, and make our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.

Road safety continues to be a concern raised by local residents. With schools now closed for the summer holidays, our focused road safety operations around schools have been temporarily paused and will resume when pupils return in late August and early September.

In the meantime, officers remain committed to addressing road safety issues across the area. PC Woolley has continued proactive enforcement on and around Evington Road, particularly targeting motorists who choose to park irresponsibly while collecting takeaways creating a hazard for other road users, including obstructing visibility and restricting the safe movement of traffic.

We would like to remind all motorists to park considerately and legally at all times. Thoughtless parking can put pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users at risk, and enforcement action will continue where offences are identified. Together, we can help keep our roads safe for everyone.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce Stoneygate Ward's new Sergeant.

Sergeant Brown left the team in June to take up a new role based at Euston Street Police Station. We would like to thank him for his commitment to the ward and wish him every success in his new position.

At the end of July, Sergeant Parr joined the Stoneygate neighbourhood policing team after transferring from Beaumont Leys Police Station. Sergeant Parr brings with him valuable neighbourhood policing experience, having previously worked a similar beat in Loughborough, where he dealt with many of the same priorities and community concerns that we see within Stoneygate.

The team is looking forward to working with Sergeant Parr and benefiting from the fresh ideas and experience he brings to the role. We remain committed to addressing the priorities that residents have raised with us, and we are confident that his leadership will help us continue to develop effective solutions to local issues.

Sergeant Parr is keen to engage with residents, community groups, and partner agencies, and looks forward to meeting members of the community over the coming months. Together, we will continue working to make Stoneygate a safer place to live, work, and visit.
