☀️ HEATWAVE SAFETY ADVICE – STAY SAFE IN THE HOT WEATHER ☀️

With temperatures remaining high across the area, we're encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to stay safe during the current heatwave.

💧 Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Limit alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

🏠 Keep your home cool: ✅ Close curtains, blinds and windows exposed to direct sunlight during the day. ✅ Open windows in the evening and overnight when temperatures are cooler. ✅ Use fans where available and switch off unnecessary electrical appliances that generate heat. ✅ Spend time in the coolest room of your home, especially during the hottest part of the day. ✅ Avoid using ovens and other heat-producing appliances where possible.

🌞 Avoid the hottest part of the day – if possible, limit strenuous activity between 11am and 3pm when temperatures are at their highest.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Look after vulnerable people – check in on elderly relatives, neighbours, young children, and those with underlying health conditions to make sure they are coping with the heat.

👕 Keep cool outdoors – stay in the shade where possible, wear loose-fitting light-coloured clothing, a hat, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

🚗 Never leave children or pets in vehicles – temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows slightly open.

🐶 Keep pets safe – ensure animals have access to fresh water and shade at all times, and avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

🔥 Help prevent fires – dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid using disposable barbecues in areas where they are prohibited, and report any signs of fire immediately.
