An update - South Wigston Crime Stats |
||
|
Dear Resident,
I wanted to take the opportunity to address some concerns raised by local residents and to highlight the ongoing work being carried out in South Wigston.
We recognise that confidence in local policing is important. We encourage residents to engage with the beat team directly to discuss any concerns on a one-to-one basis. This allows us to provide reassurance, properly record issues, and give updates where possible. Open communication is key to maintaining trust, and we are always willing to listen and work with the community to improve this. It is worth noting that some reports made through the control room or online systems may be closed at an early stage if there is no evidence of an offence or no viable lines of enquiry, meaning they may not reach the local team. Despite this, we make every effort to identify such incidents and follow up where possible. If this happens to you, please let us know and we will follow this up.
Vehicle ASB ‘Car Cruising, Car Meets’ With regard to recent reports of vehicles travelling in convoy, although this behaviour may raise concern, footage reviewed shows vehicles driving in a generally controlled manner. We are aware of the wider anti-social behaviour linked to some vehicles across the county. Through Op Spinner, these vehicles are monitored and can be seized after two Section 59 warnings, which is action we are actively taking. This is a managed approach and not an immediate solution. It is also important to note that vehicles being driven along a road, even if linked to ASB, does not in itself constitute a criminal offence, and we must respond using the appropriate legislation available.
Drugs Tackling drug-related activity remains a priority. Through Operation Bus, we team have made significant progress. Between January and June 2026, there has been a 250% increase in drugs intelligence submissions in South Wigston by us. The operation has also resulted in two cuckooing cases being resolved, two warrants executed, multiple arrests, and numerous stop searches, with further work ongoing. While not all operational details can be shared due to the need to protect covert activity, residents can be reassured that this issue is being dealt with robustly.
E-scooters / E-bikes We also continue to address the issue of illegal e-scooters and e-bikes through Op Pedalfast. This involves 2–3 dedicated days each month focused on enforcement. Since the operation began in April, 20 illegal e-vehicles have been seized. Officers have also provided education and guidance around legal use. During this work, one officer was unfortunately struck and injured while attempting to stop an illegal vehicle. This balaclava wearing youth was later arrested for various offences and is being dealt with.
The team South Wigston is currently covered by a small team of two PCs (Catherine and Reece) and one PCSO (Dom), we also support neighbouring areas when required. Balancing operational priorities with public demand can be challenging, but we continue to work proactively and are seeing positive results.
Key statistics (Jan 1st – May 31st: 2025 vs 2026) Youth/vehicle-related ASB reports: We remain committed to tackling local issues and continuing to deliver positive outcomes for the community. The help and support many of your provide is crucial, and to those individuals, I’d like to extend sincere thanks. You can speak to us directly on 15th June 19:00hrs at our next beat surgery – the Bowls Car Park, Blaby Road Park, South Wigston. Until then, stay safe, look our for the sun (let me know if you can find it) and we hope to see you soon.
Take care,
PC Reece Breslin | ||
