Dear Resident, We're cracking down on the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters in South Wigston, Wigston and Oadby
Whether you are commuting to work or just out for a ride, it's easy to forget that e-bikes and e-scooters are governed by specific laws. Just because you bought it online doesn't mean it's street legal E-Bikes
An e-bike stops being a "bicycle" and starts being an "unlicensed motor vehicle" if it hits these marks: The "Twist and Go" Trap: If your bike has a throttle that allows it to reach high speeds without you pedalling at all, it's classified as a mopedPower Overload: Your e-bike motor should be 250W max. If your motor wattage is higher than this, it is illegalSpeed Demons: If your e-bike goes faster than 15.5mph, it is illegal E-Scooters Privately Owned vs Rental: It is illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter in a public place - only authorised rental schemes are allowed to do this, however these schemes currently don't exist in Leicester and Leicestershire E-Scooters are classed as a motorcycle as defined in Section 185 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and, because of their low speed, are within the subclass of moped. This means that electric scooters must abide by the same road traffic legislation as mopeds and motorcycles, such as: - MOT - Licensing - Tax - Insurance If your e-bike is found to be illegal, it can be seized by Leicestershire Police without warning
