Birstall & Wanlip - January Newsletter |

|
Welcome to the monthly update for the residents and communities of the Birstall & Wanlip Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA). This newsletter will be circulated on a regular basis and will provide an insight into what is happening at the NPA.
Youth‑Related Anti‑Social Behaviour (ASB)
We have continued to receive reports of youth‑related ASB in and around Birstall, particularly during evening hours and school holiday periods. To address this, officers have increased high‑visibility patrols in key hotspot locations to provide reassurance to the community and deter further offending. Our neighbourhood team is taking a firm but proportionate approach to those responsible. Where appropriate, officers have issued informal warnings, conducted home visits, and used formal legislation to address persistent behaviour. We are working closely with parents, local schools, and partner agencies to identify the young people involved and put in place both supportive and preventative measures. This includes exploring diversionary opportunities—such as youth services, outreach programmes, and community initiatives—to help steer individuals away from further ASB.
Residential Burglaries
The Birstall ward has recently experienced an increase in residential burglaries. In response, officers have carried out targeted patrols in areas identified through crime pattern analysis, particularly during times when offences are most likely to occur. We have been engaging with residents, Neighbourhood Watch groups, and community partners to raise awareness around burglary prevention. Crime prevention advice has been shared both in person and through digital channels, focusing on practical steps such as improving home security, reporting suspicious activity, and the use of CCTV or doorbell cameras. Our investigations into the recent series of burglaries have progressed positively. Officers have arrested and charged a prolific offender with nine burglary offences connected to the area. As a result of this enforcement activity, no residential burglaries have been reported in January 2026, which is an encouraging development. We will continue working proactively to keep burglary levels low and maintain community confidence.
Vehicles Involved in ASB and Speeding, Including Car Cruising and E‑Scooters
We continue to receive reports of vehicles being driven in an anti-social manner across Birstall, including speeding, car cruising, and the misuse of e‑scooters. These behaviours pose a significant risk to road users, pedestrians, and residents, and remain one of our local policing priorities. Officers have taken enforcement action under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act, issuing warnings and seizing vehicles where necessary. Hotspot areas are being closely monitored, and signage has been installed to warn drivers and riders engaging in ASB-related driving. We are working in partnership with the local council, highways teams, and retail areas to identify longer-term solutions to vehicle-related ASB. This includes exploring environmental measures such as road layout changes, barrier installation, and improved lighting or CCTV coverage. Additionally, several officers have recently received specialist training in the use of mobile speed‑enforcement equipment, allowing us to conduct more targeted speeding operations throughout the year.
