Number plate thefts |
We have seen a bit of a rise in vehicle number plates being stolen. Here is what to do if it happens to you:
🛑 Number plate stolen? Here’s what to do next! 🛑
Call 101 or visit your local station to log it as a theft (not loss) and get your crime reference number. This protects you from any misuse of your plates. Let them know the plates are stolen so they can flag the registration. If your V5C logbook was also stolen, request a replacement using your Government Gateway. Share the crime reference number with your insurance provider to avoid being held liable for parking, tolling, or speeding offences. In the UK it’s illegal to drive without front & rear plates. Doing so could mean a fine up to £1,000, penalty points, or even vehicle seizure. Only use a DVLA‑registered supplier. You’ll need ID (driving licence, passport or utility bill) and proof of registration (V5C or equivalent). 🛡 Update your records & stay alert
