Police: Update on past few shifts

Hello Rutland! 👋

It’s been a very busy few days – just some of the things I can tell you about here are...

Foot patrols 🥾 
Welfare checks and safeguarding referrals 🤝 
Progressing investigations 🕵

But a big chunk of time has been taken up by road traffic collisions, which some of (not all), seem to have been caused by drivers travelling too fast for the conditions❗

With all the rain we’ve had, (and more forecast next week 🌧️), here are some essential tips for driving safely in wet weather and flood water 👇

✅ Slow down, drive to the conditions and increase your stopping distance – wet roads can double your braking distance.
✅ Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
✅ Check your tyres – good tread and correct pressure are vital for grip in the rain.
✅ Use dipped headlights even in the daytime – make sure you can see and be seen.
✅ Avoid sudden braking or steering – keep it smooth to prevent skidding.
✅ Watch for standing water – hitting it at speed can cause aquaplaning. If this happens:

⚠️ Ease off the accelerator.
⚠️ Keep the steering straight.
⚠️ Don’t brake hard.

🌊 Flood water advice 👇

❌ Never drive through flood water if you can’t see the road beneath it – just 30cm of water can float a car!

If you must go through shallow water:

🚙 Go slowly and steadily.
🚗 Keep revs high in a low gear.
🚙 Test your brakes afterwards.

✖️ If in doubt, turn around somewhere safe– it’s not worth the risk 🚫
