Darker Nights Campaign:

🏡 Residential burglaries can be deeply upsetting. It can be traumatic to lose valuable and sentimental items from your home and the thought of a stranger invading your property is distressing.

🔐 Protect your home against opportunist burglars by remembering to lock up and light up.

🌙 These darker evenings can provide the perfect cover for burglars who can easily spot an insecure window or door, or valuable left in plain sight.

🚪 Install strong fences and gates and make sure that they are always locked. Consider adding trellis and spiky plants to the fences to make it difficult for burglars to climb over them.

🎥 Consider installing external CCTV cameras or video doorbells. Always lock your windows and doors when you are in and out.

💡 Try to make your house look as occupied as possible when you are not there. Use automatic timer switches to turn lamps on and off sporadically.

👀 Do not leave your house and vehicle keys in the lock or on a side table in view of a window or next to a door. If you wish to obtain a faraday pouch you can visit a police station and ask for a car key pouch.

🌂 Do not leave items in open porches that could be used to enter your home such as curved-handled umbrellas. These items could be used as “fishing” implements to use through a letter box or open window.

🗞️ If you’re going away, cancel newspapers and milk. You could also ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your property and take your post inside.

🔦 Use external sensor lights on your driveway / rear garden.

🌲 Think about increasing the visibility of the entrances and exits of your home. Consider cutting back and removing large plants and bushes that restrict visibility from the road.
