Public Safety Message: Beware of Rogue Traders in Moira and Surrounding Areas |
||
Following a recent incident in the Moira area of North West Leicestershire, we are urging residents to remain vigilant against rogue traders operating in our communities.
These individuals often pose as legitimate tradespeople offering services such as roofing, building repairs, or garden work. They may use persuasive or aggressive tactics to pressure residents—particularly the elderly or vulnerable—into agreeing to unnecessary or overpriced work. In some cases, victims have lost thousands of pounds and been left feeling unsafe in their own homes.
How to Stay Safe:Leicestershire Trading Standards recommends the following steps to protect yourself and others
Do not agree to work on the doorstep. Genuine tradespeople will not pressure you. Check credentials. Look up the company on Companies House and verify their address via the Royal Mail website. Get multiple quotes. Aim for at least three from different businesses. Never pay in cash. Use secure methods like bank transfer or credit card. Avoid upfront payments. Reputable traders will not demand money before work begins. Speak to someone you trust. If unsure, consult family or friends before making decisions. Report suspicious behaviour. Call 101 for non-emergencies or 999 if you feel threatened. Community Support:We encourage everyone to look out for neighbours, especially those who may be more vulnerable. If you suspect someone is being targeted, offer support and report it.
Reporting Rogue Traders:To report a rogue trader or seek advice, contact: Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline: 0808 223 1133 Leicestershire Trading Standards: Report online
Together, we can help protect our community from fraud and exploitation. | ||
