🛡️ Neighbourhood Policing Update – Loughborough Town Centre Keeping Our Community Safe and Connected Over the past few weeks, our neighbourhood team has been working hard to ensure Loughborough Town Centre remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Here's what we've been up to: 🔹 Operation Pedalfast Launched by Leicestershire Police, Operation Pedalfast is a dedicated enforcement campaign aimed at: Tackling the use of illegal or modified e-bikes and e-scooters that do not meet UK EPAC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) regulations.Responding to public concerns about nuisance riding and safety risks in public spaces 🚨 Key Enforcement Actions: Immediate seizure of illegal vehicles without prior warning.Vehicles that do not meet EPAC standards are treated as electric mopeds or motorcycles, requiring:- A number plate
- Insurance
- A valid driving licence
- Helmet use
Seized vehicles may be scrapped under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act👮♂️🌞 Safer Streets Summer Team The Safer Streets Summer Team is a collaborative effort led by Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs), local police forces, and partner agencies, supported by the Home Office. This has started today and will run to the 30 September, the initiative focuses on: 📹 Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) In the last update I reported a rise in Asb in the town centre by local youths, I am happy to report that eleven youths were identified by capturing them on CCTV, Body Worn video interactions and attending incidents as quickly as possible to obtain their personal details. All eleven youths have been spoken to in the company of their parent/s/guardians and given words of advice, this is inline with the ASB Incremental approach. 🛴🚲Motorbikes/Mopeds/Dirt Bikes There have been several complaints of nuisance off road bikes being rode at speed and in an unsafe manner. The beat team aware of the issues being raised and are trying to identify the riders. We do have some lines of enquiry to follow following intelligence suggesting names and addresses of the persons responsible Below is guidance on Off Road Vehicles. In the UK as of 2025, off-road bikes such as dirt bikes and pit bikes are not allowed to be ridden on public highways or roads unless they meet specific legal requirements. Here's a breakdown of the rules: Off-road bikes are not road legal by default. They typically lack essential features like headlights, indicators, mirrors, number plates, and road-appropriate tyresYou can only ride them on private land with the landowner’s permission. Riding them in public spaces like parks, pavements, forests, or beaches is illegal To be road legal, a bike must:- Be registered with the DVLA
- Have a valid MOT (if over 3 years old)
- Be insured and taxed
- Be fitted with road-legal tyres and all necessary safety equipment
- Be approved under the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986
Consequences of illegal use: If you're caught riding an off-road bike on public roads or spaces without meeting these requirements, you could face: Fines or prosecutionSeizure of the bikePoints on your driving licence or disqualification 🤝 We’re Here for You If you see your local beat team, Safer Streets Summer Team or the Street Wardens out and about, please don’t hesitate to say hello. We’re always happy to chat, listen to your concerns, and offer support. Our Priorities(issued 30/06/2025) To reduce the number of thefts in and around Loughborough town centre Action Taken: Cycle register schemes continue and it is pleasing to note that there has been a significant decrease in the number of cycle theft reports.Working closely with the town centre security wardens, we have seen a decrease in the number of thefts. We have linked in with a number of stores who have been repeatedly targeted to help reduce the number of thefts they are having. With that several arrests and remands have been made as a result.Reduce Anti-social behaviour reported by residents across the local area in varying formats including car cruise meetings, noisy parties, youths causing issues in the town centre. Action Taken: Additional officers are currently being deployed as part of Operation Lexical, whereby officers will patrol in and around Loughborough town centre in order to combat reports of anti social behaviourA number of young persons have been arrested for reports of assaults and ASB in the town, a brief dispersal order has also been utilised to move youths on.There are an increasing number of e-bikes and e-scooters being used in the town centre which is causing a potential danger to pedestrians.
