Trading Standards Message

Alert message sent 01/07/2019 14:49:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Dear Members

Leicestershire Trading Standards is warning residents to be aware of phone calls advising of Council Tax refunds and requesting bank card details to be able to process the refund. This is then followed up by another call claiming to be from the bank’s fraud department, advising them to move money into a ‘safe’ account. Both of these are calls are scams.

Remember, a genuine organisation will never ask you for security details such as your PIN or passwords. Banks will never ask you to move money to another account. If you’re not 100% sure who you are talking to, DON’T give out ANY personal or financial information, even if you are told you have been a victim of fraud or a scam.

District and Borough Councils will not contact you via the phone if you are owed a council tax refund.

Sign up to Telephone Preference Service (0345 070 0707) to stop unwanted telephone calls, and contact your phone provider who may also offer a call blocking service to stop unwanted calls.

To report a trader to Trading Standards or for consumer advice contact Citizens Advice on 03454 040506. You can also report non-emergency matters to your local Police on 101.

Stay Safe
