Latest News
Telephone fraud - Telephone fraud is the number one route for fraudsters into people’s homes, with an average of 1/3 reported frauds being carried out over the telephone. Below is some advice should you become a victim of this type of fraud.
A fraudster’s narrative can change daily, with criminals purporting to be many organisations including the police, banks, retailers, Action Fraud etc, to scam their victim.
Here are some simple but effective methods used by fraudsters:
  • Spoofing the Caller ID display on phones to read as any genuine number e.g. your bank, police, HMRC etc.
  • Spoofing a dial tone, to convince people they are talking to a genuine company or organisation. Criminals sometimes ask to be called back and even ask the victim to ring the number on the back of their bank card or 999 (when claiming to be Police).
What you should do
  • Take five minutes, or introduce a process before checking, such as making a cup of tea. Calling a friend or family member (a known voice) first is also good.
  • A debt can never be paid off with a gift card of any nature – this will always be a scam.
  • Truecall - This setting blocks every call on the planet apart from the numbers of friends and family that have been inputted into the system.
  • Telephone Preference Service (TPS) – Although it won’t stop fraudsters it is a great way of reducing call volume into the home.
  • BT Call Protect – This free service is only available to BT customers, it will block some known fraudulent numbers/nuisance calls but will not stop all telephone fraud.
  • Sky Shield - Only available to SKY customers, it will not stop all telephone fraud but will reduce call volume into the home.
How you can make a difference - Start with #tell2, by telling just 2 people in your life about telephone fraud and how they can protect themselves and asking them to do the same, we can protect many. An unbroken chain of 26 tell2'ers would reach 67 million people, more than the total UK population.
Anyone with information about a crime in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland can call Leicestershire Police by dialing 101 (calls cost 15p) or call Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
