Over the last few weeks whilst the schools are off for summer we have received reports of fires being set in the Glen Parva Nature Reserve and in Everards Meadows on the neighbouring Enderby beat.
This evening, our response colleagues attended to a report of a group of young people setting fires at Everards Meadows and then dangerously throwing aerosols into the flames, causing them to explode. The initial report suggested that someone might have been injured, leading to a response from police, fire, and ambulance services.
Thankfully, no one was hurt, but this type of activity is incredibly risky and could easily have resulted in serious injuries. In the rush to run away, someone left behind a bag and a phone. We’ve since identified the owner, and their parents are now fully aware of what they were involved in. Fires on dry ground can spread rapidly and become uncontrollable in seconds, posing a severe threat to both people and the environment.
Leaving fires unattended only increases this risk. Additionally, throwing aerosols into fires is extremely hazardous, as they can explode with significant force, potentially causing life-threatening injuries to anyone nearby.
Fires and portable barbeques are not permitted on either Everards Meadows or the Glen Parva Nature Reserve and shouldn't be lit. This area is very popular area with all walks of life please enjoy it sensibly.
